Yes, there is some girl-crazy-about-boy stuff in it, but it’s also about friendships and family.

Hal’s parents are struggling with whether to keep Charley alive, a painful decision.  Hal keeps hearing Charley’s voice, directing him.  It is a page-turner for young teens, but it also kept my interest.

The story is told by a young boy who moves to a seaside town from a city during a war. They move into a town and house that appear mysterious. The train depot clock runs backward. A strange cat appear at the station, adopted by the family somewhat reluctantly. A shipwreck near the coast had no survivors. If your child is prone to nightmares, don’t hand him or her this book. Otherwise, it’s rather interesting and provocative. No happy ending.

If you have been convinced by the media that there are no moderate Muslims, this is a good memoir to read. Wilson comes from parents who are self-proclaimed atheists, but she always was drawn to spiritual matters. She went to Boston University, took Arabic, was given some Korans, and she was very much attracted. Islam felt right to her. She went to Cairo to teach English, meets an Egyptian with whom she falls in love. She also converts privately to Islam, fortunately before her involvement with Omar, so it is clear that’s not why she converted. Her picture of Egypt and the Muslim families and friends she makes is quite different from the stereotypes we usually hear. However, she also tells of the struggles and difficulties in Egypt. Her section on Iran is particularly interesting in its contrast to Egypt. It’s a beautiful memoir, and since Wilson is a journalist, it’s also well written.

Countdown by Deborah Wiles makes an attempt to make history more accessible to “young adults” by telling a story that includes graphics from the time period, in this case, the 60s. We have the Cuban missile crisis, and Franny, our narrator, experiences “Duck and Cover” at school. She briefly touches on civil rights issues. The narrative is mostly about early adolescence, the turmoil, the friends who turn on Franny, boys. That part will be familiar. I don’t know whether the story would have the same impact if the reader didn’t have some historical background. Again, if your child is prone to nightmares, this may not be the right book!

Baldwin writes this novel in the voice of Dr. Victor Aaron, a leading Alzheimer’s researcher. He lost his wife, Sara, in a car accident a year or two earlier, and he is lost himself in quite another way. He’s a workaholic who plays a bit with a student, but only a bit. He has an aunt on the Maine Island where his lab is, and she is salty enough to throw a little reality his way. He stumbles across some note cards where Sara has written about critical turning points in their relationship, and her observations are horrifyingly different from his. We see his functioning both in his personal life and his professional life quite at sea. It is an interesting novel for its absence of stereotypes and complexity of its characters. The ending is terrific.

This novel, translated by Ernesto Mestre-Reed, is set in Argentina and Columbia.  It sheds light on the resistance movement in Argentina as well as life in Columbia.  It is told primarily in dialogue, by a 15-year-old boy and his mother, divorced from his father, a “hero” in the resistance movement.  It’s as much about the relationship between the three of them as the political issues.  Mateo, the son, wants to know more about his father who kidnapped him when he was two and a half.  He wants details.  It is a slow-moving novel, but a memorable one.

She clearly worked primarily with the privileged, but her love of Italian food, particularly Northern Italian, is a delight to share. I could practically taste the dishes she made (but I’d pass up the squid!)

Taylor takes us back to World War II and on to the 60s in this novel, set in West Virginia.  It’s basically the story of race in a small town, triggered in part by the relationship between a white veteran (Loyal Ledford) and an African-American veteran (Mack).  Ledford himself has been an outsider, of course, which probably makes it easier for him to take the lead in bringing the civil rights movement to the hills of W. Virginia.  The main characters are memorable and complex.

Cathie was a single mom, totally devoted to holding her family together for much of her adult life. Finally the kids were out of the nest, and she found herself without a close friend, or even adult relationships. She put an ad in the newspaper for a women’s group, and in the group who appeared, Denise was among them. She was outspoken, caring, and a risk-taker. She also had MS. This is not a sentimental book, and like most friendships, it has its ups and downs, but it is definitely worth reading

In this time of polarization and conflict, this is a good novel to read.  It’s set in pre-Underground Railroad times before the Civil War in Virginia.  It’s told in the first person by Hannah, a young woman whose parents were killed in a mysterious accident, taken in by an aunt who is the epitome of stern.  It was a trait her aunt probably needed as she managed a plantation without her husband who died.  She has a number of slaves whom she treats humanely, at least in the culture of the time.  Hannah meets Livietta, an escaped slave, in a cave on the plantation.  Their relationship forms the core of the book.  It is moving but not sentimental.  There are certainly ups and downs as they grow, but it is hopeful.

The topic of this memoir sounds pretty sad—infertility and premies.  Alexa makes it into a really interesting read.  She has a self-deprecating sense of humor which lightens a difficult topic, and she is apparently very honest about her feelings through it all.  It helps to know that both she and the baby do survive.  I learned a whole lot about the difficulties for premies.  It’s a tough road in any case, and in Alexa and Simone’s case, more so since Simone was born at 23 weeks.
