Author Reading: Leigh Stein, LAND OF ENCHANTMENT

In July 2011, Leigh Stein received a call letting her know that her ex-boyfriend Jason had been killed in a motorcycle accident. Leigh first met Jason when he was nineteen and she was twenty-two. Within months, they had fallen in love and moved to New Mexico, the “Land of Enchantment.” But what was supposed to be a romantic adventure quickly turned sinister, as Jason's behavior went from playful and spontaneous to controlling and erratic. In this unflinching memoir, Leigh Stein examines her grief over Jason’s death while also capturing the realities of intimate partner violence.

Leigh Stein is the author of the novel The Fallback Plan as well as a collection of poetry, Dispatch from the Future. Her nonfiction has appeared in or at the Hairpin, Poets & Writers, the Toast, and xoJane. Formerly an editorial staff member at the New Yorker, she is co-founder and executive director of the literary nonprofit organization Out of the Binders. Leigh grew up in Chicago and currently lives in Brooklyn.

For this event, Leigh will be joined by Alison Bowen. Bowen is a features reporter at the Chicago Tribune, where she writes on everything from health to books. Her byline has appeared in the New York Times and the New York Daily News, among others. A Kansas City native, she has a master’s degree in Journalism and Latin American Studies.
