For this free event, Timothy Stewart-Winter will discuss his new book, Queer Clout: Chicago and the Rise of Gay Politics. Tracing the gay movement's path since the 1950s from the closet to the corridors of power, Queer Clout shifts the story from the coastal gay meccas to the more representative trajectory of the nation's great inland metropolis. Queer Clout draws on a decade of research, including diverse oral histories and previously unexamined archival documents, and is richly illustrated with 30 images spanning more than half a century.
Timothy Stewart-Winter received his Ph.D. in U.S. history at the University of Chicago, where he began the research for Queer Clout, which is his first book. He is currently an assistant professor of history and acting director of the women's and gender studies program at Rutgers University-Newark, and co-directs the Queer Newark Oral History Project. His writing has appeared in publications including the Journal of American History, Gender & History, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and Dissent.
