Book Launch Party: WOW, NO THANK YOU by Samantha Irby

Women & Children First is proud to host Samantha Irby for the launch of her new essay collection, WOW, NO THANK YOU. For this event, Samantha will be in conversation with Megan Stielstra. This event will include a reading, conversation, audience Q&A, and book signing.

Each ticket includes a copy of WOW, NO THANK YOU, which attendees will pick up at the event. The event will be held at Wilson Abbey (935 W. Wilson).

Irby is forty, and increasingly uncomfortable in her own skin despite what Inspirational Instagram Infographics have promised her. She has left her job as a receptionist at a veterinary clinic, has published successful books and has been friendzoned by Hollywood, left Chicago, and moved into a house with a garden that requires repairs and know-how with her wife in a Blue town in the middle of a Red state where she now hosts book clubs and makes mason jar salads. This is the bourgeois life of a Hallmark Channel dream. She goes on bad dates with new friends, spends weeks in Los Angeles taking meetings with "tv executives slash amateur astrologers" while being a "cheese fry-eating slightly damp Midwest person," "with neck pain and no cartilage in [her] knees," who still hides past due bills under her pillow. The essays in this collection draw on the raw, hilarious particulars of Irby's new life. Wow, No Thank You is Irby at her most unflinching, riotous, and relatable.

Samantha Irby is the author of the acclaimed essay collection Meaty and the New York Times Bestseller We Are Never Meeting in Real Life. She lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan and writes the blog bitches gotta eat.

Megan Stielstra is the author of three collections: The Wrong Way To Save Your Life, Once I Was Cool, and Everyone Remain Calm. Her work appears in the Best American Essays, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Reader, Poets & Writers, The Believer, Longreads, Tin House, Guernica, Catapult, LitHub, Buzzfeed Reader, The Rumpus, and elsewhere. A longtime company member with 2nd Story, she has told stories for National Public Radio, Radio National Australia, Museum of Contemporary Art, Goodman Theatre, and regularly with The Paper Machete live news magazine at The Green Mill. She teaches creative nonfiction at Northwestern University.

Tickets are non-refundable. If you purchase a ticket and then do not attend the event, you will have 30 days to pick up your copy of WOW, NO THANK YOU at Women & Children First (5233 N. Clark St.)
