Drawing Resistance: Using Comics for Social Change

Using examples of their recent projects, Nicole Marie Burton of Canada-based Ad Astra Comix is joined by Chicago locals Leila Abdelrazzaq and members of Apna Ghar (Our Home) for a discussion on the benefits of using comic books to talk social justice - from marginalized histories to modern-day experiences of sexism, from political satire of the powerful to the do's and don't's of being an ally, comics offer a unique capacity to engage, inform, and entertain. Ad Astra Comix is a Canadian publisher of comics with social justice themes. Founded in 2013, the company is currently on tour to foster a community of political comics artists, writers and readers. Presenters for this event include: Nicole Marie Burton, Leila Abdelrazaq, and members of Apna Ghar Chicago
